"Loved this training! Subject matter was interesting and explained well. Training offered depth as well as great examples. Dr. Maisel has enthusiasm and strong expertise."
Panic disorder remains one of the most impairing and misunderstood anxiety disorders encountered in clinical practice. Although cognitive behavioral therapy has strong empirical support, many clinicians report uncertainty about implementing interoceptive exposure, addressing safety behaviors, or integrating newer approaches such as ACT and inhibitory learning.
This highly practical workshop bridges the gap between research and clinical practice.
Description:
Join clinical psychologist Dr. Max Maisel for an in-depth, evidence-based workshop on the assessment and treatment of panic disorder. This comprehensive training provides mental health professionals with a practical framework for conceptualizing panic through cognitive-behavioral, biological, and process-based models while integrating contemporary research on inhibitory learning, interoceptive conditioning, and exposure therapy.
Participants will learn how to differentiate panic disorder from related diagnoses, conduct evidence-based assessments, provide effective psychoeducation, and implement both interoceptive and in vivo exposure with response prevention. The workshop also explores cognitive interventions, ACT-consistent acceptance strategies, attentional training, mindfulness, psychopharmacology, and advanced clinical topics including nocturnal panic attacks, trauma-related panic, and common treatment obstacles.
Through real-world case examples, multiple live role plays, experiential exercises, and practical clinical demonstrations, attendees will leave with immediately applicable skills for delivering effective, compassionate, and scientifically grounded treatment for panic disorder.
Objectives
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
Conduct evidence-based assessment and differential diagnosis of panic disorder using structured interviews, screening measures, and functional analysis.
Develop individualized case conceptualizations using biological, cognitive-behavioral, and process-based models of panic disorder.
Implement interoceptive exposure, in vivo exposure, and response prevention interventions using principles of inhibitory learning and expectancy violation.
Utilize ACT, CBT, and psychoeducational interventions to reduce fear of bodily sensations, decrease avoidance, and increase psychological flexibility.
Modify treatment plans to address complex presentations, including trauma-related panic, nocturnal panic attacks, medication considerations, and common barriers to exposure therapy.
Target Audience: Introductory. For clinicians with little to no experience in the subject matter. Intermediate. For clinicians with experience who want to strengthen their skillset.
