OCD is often misdiagnosed. Individuals may go many years without an accurate diagnosis and in some cases are being treated for a different disorder because the mental health provider wasn’t familiar with OCD. Therefore, this course will start with how to recognize and differentiate OCD from other disorders. Once an OCD diagnosis has been established, we will then review how to do a comprehensive assessment which will guide your treatment plan.

This presenter strongly believes that theory should guide treatment decisions. So, this course will cover learning theory, inhibitory learning theory, and relational frame theory. In each case theory will be translated into actual practice giving you specific step-by-step instructions of how to implement each of these approaches and how to integrate them into a coherent model.

Finally, OCD in many cases is a “family affair”, so we will review tips and strategies about when and how to engage family members into treatment when applicable.

The last module of the training will take you through a case example to demonstrate how you can use all what you have learned and implement it in a comprehensive way.

At the end of this 4- hour training, you should be able to accurately identify OCD, do a comprehensive assessment, and apply some of the treatment interventions to some of your clients.

Objectives
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• Accurately diagnose OCD and differentiate it from at least four other psychological disorders.

• Distinguish two ways in which inhibitory learning theory differs from emotional processing theory and why this is important when conducting exposure and response prevention therapy.

• Demonstrate knowledge of at least three of the ACT processes and how to implement them in treatment for OCD.

• Conduct assessments for at least three family accommodating behaviors and why it is important to target these in OCD treatment.

• Integrate appropriate assessment tools for OCD into treatment planning.

• Apply at least two treatment interventions for OCD.

About Your Trainer:
Jeff Szymanski, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of “Getting to the Next Level Consulting”, a firm specializing in clinical and organizational consultation for mental health professionals at all levels. With more than 25 years as a leader in mental health, Dr. Szymanski is a senior clinician, consultant, trainer, and administrator. He previously served as the Executive Director of the International OCD Foundation for 15 years following his role as the Director of Psychological Services at the OCD Institute at McLean Hospital. Currently, Dr. Szymanski is a Clinical Instructor in Psychology (part-time) at Harvard Medical School, where he supervises pre-doctoral psychology interns through McLean Hospital’s internship program. He is the author of “The Perfectionist’s Handbook”, and he has appeared in over 150 media stories, presented at a multitude of conferences, as well as delivering several domestic and international trainings.
