About This Course

Description:
Join clinical psychologist Dr. Max Maisel for a deep dive into the treatment of Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), including hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting, and more.

This comprehensive 6-hour workshop is designed for mental health professionals seeking practical, research-informed tools to address these often misunderstood and misdiagnosed conditions.

Through a process-based lens, participants will explore how to conduct meaningful assessments using the ComB model, implement Habit Reversal Training (HRT), and strategically integrate ACT, ERP, and mindfulness into clinical care. Real-world case examples, a live role-play demonstration of BFRB treatment in action, interactive exercises, and detailed tracking tools will equip you to tailor interventions for each client’s unique presentation.

Whether you're new to BFRB treatment or looking to expand your repertoire, this workshop offers a fresh and integrative framework grounded in compassion, nuance, and science.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

1. Apply the SCAMP model to conduct comprehensive functional assessments of BFRBs across sensory, cognitive, affective, motor, and environmental domains in a clinical setting.

2. Analyze the functional and neurocognitive mechanisms underlying BFRBs using process- based therapy to support individualized treatment planning.

3. Demonstrate the use of habit reversal training (HRT) techniques—including awareness training, competing response training, and stimulus control—for effective symptom management of BFRBs.

4. Integrate third-wave behavioral interventions, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and metaphors, to enhance psychological flexibility and improve treatment outcomes in BFRB clients.

5. Evaluate real-world clinical considerations such as relapse prevention strategies, pharmacological options, and differentiation from related conditions (e.g., OCD, tics, BDD) to ensure ethical, evidence-based care.

6. Demonstrate the use of exposure therapy to help clients desensitize to overwhelming BFRB related urges.
