This training will highlight the bidirectional relationship between OCD symptoms and sleep difficulties, illustrating how disrupted sleep can worsen intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and emotion regulation, and why targeted intervention is essential.
Description:
Many individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience significant sleep disturbances, including insomnia and circadian rhythm disruption. These sleep problems not only increase distress and fatigue but can also interfere with the effectiveness of exposure and response prevention (ERP) and other evidence-based treatments. This training will highlight the bidirectional relationship between OCD symptoms and sleep difficulties, illustrating how disrupted sleep can worsen intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and emotion regulation, and why targeted intervention is essential.
Clinicians will learn how to thoughtfully integrate elements of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) into OCD treatment, with practical guidance on adjusting ERP protocols for clients who are struggling with exhaustion or irregular rhythms. Case vignettes and real-world examples will demonstrate how to address sleep-related triggers, modify exposure practices, and use behavioral strategies to strengthen both sleep quality and OCD outcomes. Participants will leave with a toolkit of strategies they can immediately apply in practice to better support clients coping with the dual challenges of OCD and poor sleep.
Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
Describe the bidirectional relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms and sleep disturbances, including insomnia and circadian rhythm disruption.
Identify how poor sleep impacts the effectiveness of exposure and response prevention (ERP) and cognitive-behavioral therapy interventions.
Demonstrate strategies for integrating elements of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) with ERP when working with clients experiencing both OCD and sleep dysregulation.
Apply case-based decision-making skills to adapt ERP intensity, timing, and structure in the context of fatigue, disrupted sleep, or circadian rhythm challenges.
Target Audience: Introductory. For clinicians with little to no experience in the subject matter. For clinicians with experience who want to strengthen their skillset.
