Eating disorders and OCD share similar symptoms and commonly co-occur, yet few clinicians feel equipped to effectively treat both concurrently. Up to 40% of individuals with eating disorders may meet criteria for OCD at some point in their lives. This course highlights differential diagnosis as well as practical strategies for integrating evidence-based treatments for individuals with both.
Description:
Eating disorders and OCD share similar symptoms and commonly co-occur, yet few clinicians feel equipped to effectively treat both concurrently. According to the most up to date research, up to 40% of individuals with eating disorders may meet criteria for OCD at some point in their lives. Overlapping traits such as perfectionism, rigidity, and compulsive behaviors can complicate treatment. This course will review how to distinguish these diagnoses from one another, as well as propose practical strategies for integrating evidence-based treatments for individuals with both. Participants will have the opportunity to apply these skills using case studies in small groups. This will allow participants to gain practice tailoring treatment strategies to integrate concurrent treatment of OCD and eating disorders.
Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
Differentiate symptoms of OCD from those of eating disorders, as well as understand common overlapping traits.
Demonstrate a greater understanding of how comorbid eating disorders and OCD can impact the clinical presentation and treatment of one another.
Formulate an integrated treatment approach for OCD and eating disorders using evidence-based treatments such as ERP and ACT.
Apply an integrated approach to treatment planning using case studies.
Target Audience: Introductory. For clinicians with little to no experience in the subject matter. For clinicians with experience who want to strengthen their skillset.
