Live - April 17th 12-1 PM Eastern

About This Course

Description:
This presentation by the principal developer of the Y-BOCS will cover its administration and scoring.  The Y-BOCS is the world-wide gold standard for measuring the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in individuals with OCD.  It is used for monitoring outcome in response to treatment with therapy, medications, or devices.  The scale is organized according to 4 parts: 1. Symptom checklist, 2. Target Symptom List, 3. Severity items, and 4. Answer sheet.   The 10 severity items include 5 questions on obsessions and 5 questions on compulsions.  Avoidance is also assessed.  Interviewing pointers and commons pitfalls will be discussed.

Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate accurate scoring and administration of the Y-BOCS by applying standardized probing techniques to differentiate between obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors in clinical interviews.

  • Evaluate the clinical severity of OCD by appropriate scoring of the 10 core items of the Y-BOCS as a reflection of interference, functional impairment and distress.

  • Identify common pitfalls in clinician-administered assessments, such as misidentifying "mental rituals" as obsessions to improve the inter-rater reliability of symptom monitoring.

Target Audience: Introductory. For clinicians with little to no experience in the subject matter. For clinicians with experience who want to strengthen their skillset.
